Professional wrestler hopes to make an impact outside the ring.
February 4, 2013 / AURORA, IL—Medallion Media Group and Triple Threat Mentoring are teaming up to bring WWE Superstar and SmackDown General Manager Booker T to Chicago on February 7 and 8 to speak with area youth. Booker will talk to young adults from Quad County Urban League in Aurora, students from Paul Robeson High School in Chicago, and inmates from the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center in Chicago about directing their focus away from negative influences, such as gangs, drugs, and violence, and toward a greater purpose for their lives.
Having grown up in challenging family circumstances in a tough neighborhood, Booker knows firsthand how negative influences can impact a young person. Booker’s own journey is documented in his autobiography, Booker T: From Prison to Promise (Medallion Press, 2012, with Andrew William Wright). In the revealing account, Booker details his struggles from his youngest years. Losing his father at only ten months old and his mother at only thirteen years old, Booker was forced, along with his seven siblings, to navigate life alone. Wrestling with hunger, poverty, and criminal influences, Booker struggled to survive in urban Houston and soon spiraled out of control, gravitating toward gang life and ultimately landing in prison. It was there that he made a conscious decision to change the direction of his life. Booker’s hope is to support young kids in making positive choices as well.
Booker T will also appear at Barnes & Noble in Oakbrook, IL, Thursday at 6:30 p.m., where he will be signing copies of Booker T: From Prison to Promise.
