Robert
Barr Smith entered
the United States Army as a private in 1958, and was commissioned
in the following year. He served
in Vietnam with 4th Infantry Division, two tours in Germany – a
total of more than seven years -- and with troop units and
on posts throughout the United States, retiring as a Colonel.
He is a Senior Parachutist, and holds the Legion of Merit
(two awards), the Bronze Star, and other decorations.
He has served as
the Staff Judge Advocate – senior
lawyer and legal advisor to the commanding general – for
the 82nd Airborne Division, 1st Armored Division, 7th Infantry
Division and Fort Ord, California, Fort Benning, Georgia,
and V U.S. Army Corps. He also served as a trial judge and
as Executive Officer of two judge advocate offices.
He grew up in Palo Alto, California, then earned a BA in
History and a Doctor of Laws at Stanford University. He is
a professor of law at the University of Oklahoma, where he
served six years as Associate Dean for Academics and Associate
Director of the Law Center.
He lectures extensively on military and western history,
and is the author or co-author of nine books and more than
a hundred magazine articles in military and western history.
